My name is James, I'm 18 years old and I live in the UK. I've been photographing for about a year now, and 90% of the time I've been taking pictures at night. I use 3 different cameras for night photography. My main one being a Canon eos 5D, my others are a Canon eos 20D and a Canon eos 500 35mm film camera. I mainly use wide angle lenses such as the Canon 17-40mm F4L and Canon 24-70mm f2.8L which offer unbelievable contrast and sharpness.
My lighting varies slightly with each shot. I like to artificially light subjects using a technique called 'Light Painting', this is literally painting a subject with light. For this, I use both 'normal' torches and LED torches (both give off different colour casts). I also use a Canon 580ex flashgun (manually, off camera).
There are often unnatural looking colours in my images, these are created using coloured lighting gels (similar to disco lighting) over my desired light source. I must emphasise that these colours are not created in Photoshop or any other editing application. I take great pride in how little I edit my images, I often leave images exactly how they were taken. I very rarely change anything more than white balance and minor contrast tweaks. I've never added saturation, changed curves or levels or pretty much anything else by editing. I do use photoshop to create panoramic shots and have just started exploring HDR and compositing. I will always state what post production techniques have been used on my flickr site. If you have any questions regarding night photography or my pictures please feel free to contact me.
